Mount Artxanda

Hello! Two months in Bilbao already, how fast the time flies! This Sunday I visited Mount Artxanda with a couple of friends. It's a recreational area at the top of the mountain with panoramic views over Bilbao. Sadly this time the views were not so good because of the fog/clouds/whatever. The highest point is 251 meters.

A funicular takes you there and the trip lasts only 3 minutes. The funicular runs every 15 minutes or more often if needed. Standard ticket costs 0,95€. It works all labor days from 7.15am till 10pm. During holidays and Sunday from 8.15am to 10pm and during summer months June, July, August and September it ends at 11pm. The funicular was opened in 1915. The departure point is quite close to the center, within walking distance from the Guggenheim museum.

At the top there is a park, restaurants, hotel and a sports complex. The area is quite popular among the inhabitants of the city and the tourists. When we were there, there was many people enjoying the sun (+21 today!).  Earlier there used to be a casino also. The area itself is not so big, but it's nice and relaxing. 

Suomeksi: Moi taas! Kaksi kuukautta jo Bilbaossa, kuinka nopeasti aika meneekään! Tänä sunnuntaina vierailin kavereiden kanssa Mount Artxandalla. Se on virkistysalue vuoren huipulla ja sieltä on panoraamanäkymä Bilbaon ylitse. Harmi kyllä, tällä kertaa näkymät eivät olleet niin hienoja sumun/pilvien/minkä olikaan vuoksi. Korkein kohta on 251 metrissä.

Funikulaari vie sinut vuorelle ja matka kestää vain 3 minuuttia. Funikulaari kulkee joka 15 minuutti tai useammin tarvittaessa. Lippu maksaa 0,95€. Funikulaari kulkee työpäivinä kello 7.15 alkaen kello 22.00 asti. Lomina ja sunnuntaisin kello 8.15 alkaen kello 22.00 asti ja kesäkuukausina kesä-, heinä-, elo- ja syyskuussa se kulkee kello 23.00 asti. Funikulaari avattiin jo vuonna 1915. Sen lähtöasema on melko lähellä keskustaa, kävelyetäisyydellä Guggenheimista.

Huipulla on puisto, ravintoloita, hotelli ja urheilukeskus. Alue on melko suosittu turistien ja paikallisten keskuudessa. Kun olimme siellä, siellä oli paljon ihmisiä nauttimassa auringosta (+21 astetta tänään!). Alueella sijaitsi aiemmin myös kasino. Alue itsessään ei ole kovin suuri, mutta se on mukava ja rentouttava.

Two weeks in Bilbao

I'm so creative with headlines, I know. I have been living here in Bilbao for two weeks now and I have really enjoyed so far. I have started my classes at school. I have five courses here: congress and event management, tourist destinations, analysis of tourism and leisure demand, regular Spanish course and Basque language and culture course. I will tell more about the courses and studying later because the classes just started so it's better to tell about them later when I have more insight. At the moment it seems that the teachers here are more strict and have more authority than what I had in Finland (but this is good). One funny observation which I made is that here the Spanish students like to sit in the front row unlike in Finland where everyone always wants to sit at the back. Also these Spanish students have been surprisingly quiet when the teacher speaks, surprisingly in Finland Finnish students seem to make more noise.

This picture was taken on the Mount Artxanda which is a park with panoramic views of the city. It's possible to go there by funicular and it doesn't cost much. Now after being in Bilbao for sometime and seeing the city surrounded by mountains, I feel like Finland is really flat (which is the truth, except in the North in some places). Weird feeling for a Finn standing so high and seeing a scenery like this. This other picture was taken next to the Playa Mioño. Very beautiful place. I have also bought the tickets for Guggenheim's Art After Dark-event. It's the event where you can visit the exhibitions, listen to the music played by a DJ and drink some drinks. And as its name says, it happens between 10pm-1am. I'm waiting for that eagerly. Also in my plans is go to see the match of Athletic Bilbao as soon as possible.

Suomeksi: Olen todella luova otsikoiden kanssa, vai mitä? Nyt olen asunut Bilbaossa kaksi viikkoa ja olen todella nauttinut tähän asti. Olen aloittanut tunnit koulussa. Minulla on viisi kurssia täällä: kongressit ja tapahtumat, matkailukohteet, analyysi turismin ja vapaa-ajan kysynnästä, espanja sekä baskin kieli ja kulttuuri. Kerron enemmän opiskelusta ja kursseista myöhemmin sillä tunnit ovat vasta alkaneet ja myöhemmin minulla on parempi käsitys niistä. Tällä hetkellä vaikuttaa siltä että opettajat ovat täällä tiukempia ja heillä on enemmän auktoriteettia mitä suomalaisilla opettajillani (mutta tämä on hyvä asia). Yksi hauska havainto on se, että täällä espanjalaiset opiskelijat näyttävät pitävän eturivissä istumisesta, kun taas Suomessa opiskelijat haluavat aina istua takarivissä. Olen myös yllättänyt siitä, että espanjalaiset opiskelijat ovat olleet yllättävän hiljaa kun opettaja puhuu, yllättäen Suomessa suomalaiset opiskelijat tuntuvat olevan meluisampia.

Ensimmäinen kuvat on otettu Artxanda-vuorelta jossa on puisto mikä tarjoaa todella hienot maisemat kaupungista. Sinne pääsee funikulaarilla eikä matka maksa paljon. Nyt oltuani Bilbaossa jonkin aikaa ja nähtyäni vuorien ympäröimän kaupungin, minusta tuntuu että Suomi on todella, siis todella tasainen (mikä on totta, lukuunottamatta joitakin paikkoja pohjoisessa). Outo tunne suomalaiselle seisoa niin korkealla ja nähdä tällainen maisema. Tämä toinen kuva on otettu Mioño-nimisen rannan vieressä. Todella kaunis paikka. Olen myös ostanut liput Guggenheimin Art After Dark-tapahtumaan. Se on tapahtuma jossa voit vierailla näytteleyissä nauttien samalla DJ:n soittamasta musiikista ja juomista ja kuten nimi sanoo, se tapahtuu 22.00-1.00. Odotan todella innolla. Suunnitelmissani on myös mennä katsomaan Athletic Bilbaon peli niin pian kuin mahdollista.
