Relaxing Saturday & the best crepes ever

Kaixo! Today the rain has continued but that didn't make me stay at home. In the morning I went to the shopping center nearby called Zubiarte. It's located close to the Guggenheim museum and there you can find many stores, for example my favourite stores Bershka, Pull&Bear, Stradivarius and Shana. There is also a movie theater and some restaurants.

On the way back I went to eat in a restaurant called Don Crepe. They serve different crepes, salty and sweet. It's on my school route and I have wanted to go in many times and finally I did it. The prices are from 3.70€ to 7.50€ and it's really worth it! I ordered a crepe with apple and dulce de leche (soft toffee) and it tasted so good. Other options to order are for example crepe with ham and cheese or crepe with chocolate, cream and banana. I will certainly go there again!

After the crepe I went to walk around in Casco Viejo (Old Town). There were many people especially at Plaza Nueva. It's a monumental square built in 1821. There are many restaurants and people like to gather there for pintxos. Each Sunday there is a traditional flea market.

P.s. There is one really cute and tasty cupcake place also near the Guggenheim museum. It's called Mami Lou Cupcake. Above you can see the picture of a tasty cupcake which I ate when I visited it some time ago. Yum!

Suomeksi: Kaixo! Tänään sade on taas jatkunut mutta se ei saanut minua pysymään sisällä. Aamulla menin lähellä olevaan kauppakeskukseen, Zubiarteen. Se on lähellä Guggenheim-museota ja sieltä voi löytää monia kauppoja, esimerkiksi suosikkikauppani Bershka, Pull&Bear, Stradivarious ja Shana. Siellä on myös elokuvateatteri ja joitain ravintoloita.

Paluumatkalla menin syömään ravintolaan nimeltä Don Crepe. Heidän valikoimassaan on erilaisia crepejä, suolaisia ja makeita. Se on koulumatkani varrella ja olen halunnut mennä sisään monta kertaa ja viimein tein sen. Hinnat ovat 3.70€-7.50€ ja crepet ovat todellakin sen arvoisia! Tilasin crepen jossa oli omenaa ja pehmeätä toffeeta ja se maistui todella hyvältä. Muita vaihtoehtoja ovat esimerkiksi crepe kinkulla ja juustolla tai crepe suklaalla ja banaanilla. Menen varmasti uudelleen tuonne!

Crepen jälkeen menin kävelemään ympäri Casco Viejoa (vanha kaupunki). Siellä oli paljon ihmisiä, erityisesti Plaza Nuevalla. Se on aukio joka on rakennettu vuonna 1821. Siellä on paljon ravintoloita ja ihmisillä on tapana kerääntyä sinne pintxoille. Joka sunnuntai siellä on perinteinen kirpputori.

P.s. Myös lähellä Guggenheimia on yksi todella söpö ja maukas muffinssipaikka. Sen nimi on Mami Lou Cupcake. Vierailin siellä jonkin aikaa sitten ja yläpuolella on kuva muffinsista jonka söin. Nam!

Barrika beach & Pintxos in Casco Viejo

Hola! I'm so confused about the days, doesn't feel like Thursday at all! We had a four day holiday, weekend + two days because on Tuesday was All Saint's day (Día de Todos los Santos). Monday was just a day off because the University said so, which was obviously good. On All Saint's day it's a custom to return to the home villages to lay flowers on the graves of the relatives. On this day they also eat some very traditional dishes and delicacies, for example roasted chestnuts and almond cakes. Also on Monday there was Halloween celebrations but I don't care about it so much.

On Tuesday I visited Barrika beach. It's a 600 meters long beach surrounded by spectacular cliffs. It's located 25 km from Bilbao. The beach is kind of a wild with rocks and sand and it's not so big. The surroundings are green and beautiful. To take the best pictures you have to walk some stairs down and up again but it's not too bad. Up there is a restaurant/bar Golfo Norte which has a nice terrace where I was able to enjoy of the last warm moments in the middle of palm trees.

Yesterday I went to the Casco Viejo to enjoy some pintxos with a friend. It's a pintxo in Basque, in English and Spanish it's pincho. It's a small snack, typically eaten in bars and very traditional in the Basque country. They are related to tapas but the difference is that they are usually spiked with a toothpick (to prevent ingredients of falling off) often to a piece of bread. They are served in individual portions. Almost any ingredient can be put on the bread but the some of them are for example fish, croquettes, ham, cheese, mushroom etc.

Pintxos aren't normally expensive, the cheapest ones are 1-1,50€/piece. Pintxos are used as an excuse for socialising and typically one group of friends will go from one bar to another, drinking small glasses of wine or beer and eating pintxos. For example in Casco viejo there are pintxo places everywhere. Bilbao is very well-known for its gastronomy and pintxos are only one part of it! 

Suomeksi: Hola! Olen niin sekaisin päivistä, ei tunnu ollenkaan torstailta! Meillä oli neljän päivän loma, viikonloppu + kaksi päivää koska tiistaina oli "kaikkien pyhimysten päivä", suomessa vastaava on pyhäinmiestenpäivä. Maanantai oli vapaa siksi koska yliopisto päätti niin, mikä oli tietenkin hyvä. Pyhimysten päivänä on tapana palata kotikyliin ja viedä kukkia sukulaisten haudoille. Tänä päivänä myös syödään joitain hyvin perinteisiä ruokia ja herkkuja, kuten esimerkiksi paahdettuja kastanjoita tai mantelikakkuja. Maanantaina oli myös Halloween-juhlintaa mutta itse en välitä niin paljon siitä.

Tiistaina vierailin Barrika-nimisellä rannalla. Se on 600 metriä pitkä ranta jota ympäröi mahtavat kalliot. Se sijaitsee 25 kilometriä Bilbaosta. Ranta on jokseenkin villi, kiviä ja hiekkaa ja se ei ole kovin iso. Ympäristö on vihreä ja kaunis. Ottaakseen parhaat kuvat täytyy kävellä joitain portaita alas ja ylös mutta se ei ole liian paha. Ylhäällä on ravintola/baari Golfo Norte missä on mukava terassi jossa sain nauttia viimeisistä lämpimistä hetkistä palmujen keskellä.

Eilen menin Casco Viejoon nauttimaan pintxoista kaverin kanssa. Se on baskiksi pintxo, espanjaksi ja englanniksi pincho. Se on pieni purtava, syödään tyypillisesti baareissa ja se on Baskimaassa todella perinteinen. Pintxot ovat vähän niin kuin tapas mutta erilaista on se että niihin on pistetty hammastikku (estääkseen aineksia putoamasta) usein leipäpalaan. Ne tarjoillaan yksittäisannoksina. Oikeastaan mikä vain ainesosa voi olla leivän päällä mutta joitain aineksia ovat esimerkiksi kala, kroketit, kinkku, juusto, sienet, jne.

Pintxot eivät ole yleensä kalliita, halvimmat ovat 1-1,50€ kappale. Pintxoja käytetään syynä seurusteluun ja tyypillisesti ryhmä kaveruksia menee baarista toiseen, juoden pieniä viinilasillisia tai olutta ja syöden pintxoja. Esimerkiksi Casco Viejossa on pintxopaikkoja joka paikssa. Bilbao on todella tunnettu gastronomiastaan ja pintxot ovat vain yksi osa sitä!
