Facts about Bilbao and three days to go

Bilbao (Bilbo in Basque language, how cool is that?) is a city located in Northern Spain. It's a major city in the province of Biscay in the autonomous community of the Basque country. Its population is 345,141 and the population of the Bilbao metropolitan area is around 1 million. It's located by the river Nervión. Bilbao is known best of the Guggenheim museum and cuisine. Typical part of the cuisine are pintxos, which are similar to tapas but smaller. Bilbao also has an old town, Casco Viejo. Other sights to see in Bilbao are for example Museo de Bellas Artes, Campos Eliseos Theater, Zubizuri bridge, Basilica of Begoña, Lookout of Artxanda, Cultural space La Alhóndiga and Market La Ribera. I will write more about them when I have visited the sights.

Bilbao's main festival is called Aste Nagusia which attracts over 100,000 visitors each year. It begins on the Saturday of the 3rd week of August each year, lasting 9 days. The celebrations include the strongman games, free music performances, street entertainment, bullfighting and nightly firework displays. The main football club is Athletic Club, commonly known as Athletic Bilbao in English. Bilbao has mild winters and warm summers. It rains quite often in Bilbao and, surprise surprise, snow is not frequent there. The average hours of daylight in December, January and February is 9.66 hours and in the coldest month – January, typically the temperature is around 13–14 °C during the day and 5 °C at night. In the warmest month – August, the typically temperature is around 25–26 °C (77–79 °F) during the day and about 15 °C (59 °F) at night. Random fact, the coldest temperature ever recorded was −8.6 °C on the night of 3 February 1963. Feels amusing for a Finn.

Looking quite nice. But hey, I thought it was supposed to rain there all the time? Just kidding, this is ok except maybe a bit too warm for a Finn... Thought I don't want to complain as I just woke up this morning to the temperature of 10 degrees outside. At the moment I'm visiting my parents in Northern Finland and I fly to Helsinki tomorrow (four flights in total this week, awesome stuff for a person who is scared of flying). I have only one day to pack up my stuff and here I have been reading like crazy tips for packing. I always take too much stuff but now I really try to take only the clothes I use here in Finland. Let's see how it goes. In Bilbao I will live quite close to the university and city center in a shared flat except that I still don't have a flatmate. I will fly to Bilbao via Münich with Lufthansa. The flights weren't cheap (374€) but that's what you get when you don't want to wake up at 3am for a morning flight.

P.s. First things on my packing up list are rye bread and salmiakki candy, yes, seriously.

Suomeksi: Bilbao (baskiksi Bilbao, miten siistiä?) on kaupunki joka sijaitsee Pohjois-Espanjassa Nerviónjoen varrella. Siellä asuu noin 400 000 asukasta ja metropolialueella noin miljoona. Bilbao tunnetaan parhaiten Guggenheim-museosta ja keittiöstään. Tyypillinen osa baskilaista keittiötä ovat pintxot jotka ovat samankaltaisia kuin tapakset, mutta pienenmpiä. Bilbaossa on myös vanhakaupunki, Casco Viejo. Muita nähtävyyksiä Bilbaossa ovat esimerkiksi Museo de Bellas Artes, Campos Eliseos-teatteri, Zubizurin silta, Begoñan basilika, Artxandan näköalapaikka, kulttuuritila La Alhóndiga and kauppahalli La Ribera. Kirjoitan näistä lisää myöhemmin kun olen vieraillut nähtävyyksissä. Bilbaon suurin festivaali on Aste Nagusia joka kestää yhdeksän päivää. Siellä on paljon erilaista ohjelmaa, esimerkiksi musiikkia ja ilotulituksia. Festivaalilla vierailee joka vuosi yli 100 000 kävijää ja se järjestetään elokuussa (alkaa elokuun 3. viikon lauantaina). Bilbaon oma jalkapallojoukkue on nimeltään Athletic Bilbao. 

Bilbaossa on leudot talvet ja lämpimät kesät. Siellä sataa melko usein ja yllätys yllätys, lumi ei ole yleistä siellä. Joulu-, tammi-, ja helmikuussa valoisia tunteja päivässä on keskimäärin 9,66. Lämpötila kylmimpänä kuukautena tammikuussa on 13-14 astetta päivällä ja 5 astetta yöllä. Lämpimin kuukausi on elokuu jolloin lämpötila päivällä on 25-26 astetta päivällä ja 15 astetta yöllä. Random fakta, kylmin koskaan mitattu lämpötila oli -8,6 astetta, mitattu helmikuun 3 päivän yönä 1963. Tuntuu huvittavalta suomalaiselle. Sääennustus näyttää aika kivalta. Mutta hei, luulin että siellä kuuluisi sataa koko ajan? No, kunhan vitsailen, tämä on ok paitsi että lämpötilat ovat ehkä hieman liian lämpimiä suomalaiselle... En kuitenkaan halua valittaa sillä juuri tänä aamuna heräsin lämpötilan ollessa 10 astetta. 

Tällä hetkellä olen vanhempieni luona vierailemassa Pohjois-Suomessa ja lennän Helsinkiin huomenna (yhteensä neljä lentoa tällä viikolla, mahtava juttu lentopelkoiselle). Aikaa pakkaamiseen on vain yksi päivä ja täällä olen lueskellut hulluna pakkausvinkkejä. Yleensä otan reissuille aina liikaa tavaraa mutta nyt yritän ottaa vain ne vaatteet joita käytän Suomessa. Saa nähdä miten menee. Bilbaossa asun melko lähellä yliopistoa ja keskustaa kimppakämpässä paitsi että mulla ei vieläkään ole kämppistä. Lennän Bilbaoon Münchenin kautta Lufthansalla. Lennot eivät olleet halpoja (374€) mutta sen siitä saa kun ei halua herätä aamukolmelta aamulennolle. P.s.
