Christmas approaching

How come it's December already? Recent weeks have been busy as we have so many things to do at school. Next week I'm going to Madrid though for three nights. Can't wait. I have been wanting to visit Madrid for many years but so far I didn't and also I ended up on exchange in Bilbao (which was a perfect decision). Exactly in three weeks I'll be in Finland, feels crazy. I'm so happy that I'm still coming back to Bilbao though as there are still many things to experience and see!

For some reason I don't have a Christmas feeling almost at all! Probably it's because the temperatures have been around 18-19 degrees the highest. Feels surreal. On Thursday though we had pre-Christmas party with the Finnish people in Bilbao and it was so nice to eat some rice porridge and gingerbread cookies and talk in Finnish. They have also put the Christmas lights in the city so at least that gives a little bit of Christmas feeling.

Suomeksi: Miten ihmeessä voi olla jo joulukuu? Viimeisimmät viikot ovat olleet todella kiireisiä koska meillä on ollut niin paljon koulutehtäviä. Ensi viikolla kuitenkin menen Madridiin kolmeksi yöksi. En malta odottaa. Olen halunnut vierailla Madridissa jo monen vuoden ajan mutta toistaiseksi en ole käynyt ja päädyin myös Bilbaoon vaihtoon (mikä oli täydellinen päätös). Tasan kolmen viikon päästä olen Suomessa, tuntuu hullulta. Olen niin onnellinen että tulen kuitenkin vielä takaisin Bilbaoon koska on vielä paljon asioita nähtävänä ja koettavana!

Jostain syystä minulla ei ole melkein ollenkaan joulufiilistä! Luultavasti siksi koska lämpötilat ovat olleet korkeimillaan 18-19 astetta. Tuntuu surrealistiselta. Torstaina meillä oli pikkujoulut Bilbaon suomalaisten kesken ja oli niin kivaa syödä riisipuuroa ja pipareita ja puhua suomeksi. Täällä on myös laitettu jouluvalot päälle joten ainakin se tuo hieman joulufiilistä.

Day trip to wonderful Lekeitio

Today was the time to visit Lekeitio, a little town close to Bilbao. It's located 53 kilometers northeast from Bilbao. Me and my friends took the bus from the Termibus bus station. The bus takes 1h 15min and one-way ticket is 3,30€. The bus company is Bizkaibus. The bus journey has nice views especially just before Lekeitio, a lot of valleys and mountains. On weekdays and Saturdays there is a bus every hour, on Sundays not so often.

Lekeitio has around 7200 inhabitants and most of them speak Basque as first language (around 84%). The town is one of the most important fishing ports of the Basque coast. There is a beach in Lekeitio and it's called Isunza. The most important monument is the church which is called the church of Santa Maria.

It was a perfect day to visit the town, the weather was superb and there wasn't too many people, I can imagine how buzzing it is in summer. We were just strolling around, relaxing and enjoying the sun and the sound of the waves. We didn't go to any restaurants but we saw that there were many, they serve especially seafood, pintxos and txakoli (white wine). Lekeitio was really charming and I really recommend to visit it. I have to say I have chosen my exchange destination well, I love the Basque country, its culture and its nature!

Suomeksi: Tänään oli aika vierailla Lekeitiossa, pienessä kaupungissa joka sijaitsee lähellä Bilbaota. Se sijaitsee 53 kilometriä Bilbaosta koilliseen. Minä ja kaverini otimme bussin Termibus-asemalta. Bussimatka kestää 1h 15min ja yhdensuuntainen lippu on 3,30€. Bussiyritys on Bizkaibus. Bussimatkalla on kivat maisemat erityisesti juuri ennen Lekeitiota, paljon laaksoja ja vuoria. Viikolla ja lauantaisin bussi kulkees sinne kerran tunnissa, sunnuntaisin ei niin usein.

Lekeitiossa on noin 7200 asukasta ja suurin osa heistä puhuu baskia ensimmäisenä kielenään (noin 84%). Kaupunki yksi tärkeimmistä kalasatamista Baskimaan rannikolla. Lekeitiossa on ranta, Isunza nimeltään. Kaikista tärkein monumentti on kirkko jonka nimi on Santa Maria.

Tänään oli täydellinen päivä vierailla Lekeitiossa, sää oli mahtava ja siellä ei ollut liikaa ihmisiä. Voin kuvitella kuinka vilkas paikka se on kesällä. Kävelimme vain ympäriinsä, rentoutuen ja nauttien auringosta ja aaltojen äänestä. Emme menneet mihinkään ravintolaan mutta näimme että siellä oli useita, ne tarjoilevat erityisesti mereneläviä, pintxoja ja txakolia (valkoviini). Lekeitio oli todella hurmaava ja suosittelen todella paljon vierailua siellä. Täytyy sanoa että olen valinnut vaihtokohteeni hyvin, rakastan Baskimaata, sen kulttuuria ja luontoa!

Relaxing Saturday & the best crepes ever

Kaixo! Today the rain has continued but that didn't make me stay at home. In the morning I went to the shopping center nearby called Zubiarte. It's located close to the Guggenheim museum and there you can find many stores, for example my favourite stores Bershka, Pull&Bear, Stradivarius and Shana. There is also a movie theater and some restaurants.

On the way back I went to eat in a restaurant called Don Crepe. They serve different crepes, salty and sweet. It's on my school route and I have wanted to go in many times and finally I did it. The prices are from 3.70€ to 7.50€ and it's really worth it! I ordered a crepe with apple and dulce de leche (soft toffee) and it tasted so good. Other options to order are for example crepe with ham and cheese or crepe with chocolate, cream and banana. I will certainly go there again!

After the crepe I went to walk around in Casco Viejo (Old Town). There were many people especially at Plaza Nueva. It's a monumental square built in 1821. There are many restaurants and people like to gather there for pintxos. Each Sunday there is a traditional flea market.

P.s. There is one really cute and tasty cupcake place also near the Guggenheim museum. It's called Mami Lou Cupcake. Above you can see the picture of a tasty cupcake which I ate when I visited it some time ago. Yum!

Suomeksi: Kaixo! Tänään sade on taas jatkunut mutta se ei saanut minua pysymään sisällä. Aamulla menin lähellä olevaan kauppakeskukseen, Zubiarteen. Se on lähellä Guggenheim-museota ja sieltä voi löytää monia kauppoja, esimerkiksi suosikkikauppani Bershka, Pull&Bear, Stradivarious ja Shana. Siellä on myös elokuvateatteri ja joitain ravintoloita.

Paluumatkalla menin syömään ravintolaan nimeltä Don Crepe. Heidän valikoimassaan on erilaisia crepejä, suolaisia ja makeita. Se on koulumatkani varrella ja olen halunnut mennä sisään monta kertaa ja viimein tein sen. Hinnat ovat 3.70€-7.50€ ja crepet ovat todellakin sen arvoisia! Tilasin crepen jossa oli omenaa ja pehmeätä toffeeta ja se maistui todella hyvältä. Muita vaihtoehtoja ovat esimerkiksi crepe kinkulla ja juustolla tai crepe suklaalla ja banaanilla. Menen varmasti uudelleen tuonne!

Crepen jälkeen menin kävelemään ympäri Casco Viejoa (vanha kaupunki). Siellä oli paljon ihmisiä, erityisesti Plaza Nuevalla. Se on aukio joka on rakennettu vuonna 1821. Siellä on paljon ravintoloita ja ihmisillä on tapana kerääntyä sinne pintxoille. Joka sunnuntai siellä on perinteinen kirpputori.

P.s. Myös lähellä Guggenheimia on yksi todella söpö ja maukas muffinssipaikka. Sen nimi on Mami Lou Cupcake. Vierailin siellä jonkin aikaa sitten ja yläpuolella on kuva muffinsista jonka söin. Nam!

Rainy days and travel plans

Summer is over, maybe for Spanish people earlier but for me now. The rainy season has started and now it has been raining almost every day. If you plan to visit Bilbao an umbrella is really a must-have! The weather is also colder now, if it's a good day the temperature is around +15. I also noticed that for example +8 in Spain feels much colder than +8 in Finland because of the humidity.

Last Sunday we visited Bilbao Exhibition Center (BEC) with friends. In this center Finland played in the basketball world up in 2014. There was an event called "Feria del Stock" where they sold clothes, cosmetics, food etc. I just bought a case for mobile and some cheap make-up. By the way, one funny thing is that so many times when we are talking about the prices and someone says "well it's not so cheap, it's quite expensive" and then when I hear the price for me it's a normal price what I would pay in Finland or even cheaper. Here when I buy food for around five days I pay around 10€ less every time than in Finland.

My normal day here in Bilbao is to wake up at 7.00 from Monday to Thursday (Basque at 8.00, best timing ever for that) and walk to school (it takes around 20 mins). Schooldays normally go fast because they aren't long for me and I'm at home at 2.30pm except on Fridays around 1pm. I eat lunch/dinner whatever it is when I come from school and normally I don't eat again a big meal. Then I just study (= try to study), laze around, go for a walk alongside the river or meet friends. On weekends I'm just happy that I don't have to work here so I relax or visit places. Here people tend to go out late, for example during the week it's normal to meet friends around 9pm. At that time I feel so lazy to go out but I'm getting more used to it.

Of the tourism exchange students I'm the only one who is coming back after Christmas and of all the exchange students I'm one of the fewest who stay longer than December but go home for Christmas. I didn't want to take the risk that I would have had to spend it alone and also, I have had a white Christmas for the last 24 years so I'm not giving up on that. I need my snow and skiing at least for Christmas! When I was really homesick at some point I was thinking about whether I should come back or not but now I feel like it's the best option to come back: now because of school I don't have so much time to travel and then I wouldn't have to do all the exams within a few days and stress about them if I pass or not.

Today I made some travel plans for the upcoming months. These are the places I'd like to visit:

• Lekeitio (a beautiful village close to Bilbao)
• Vitoria (the capital of the Basque country)
• Madrid
• Burgos
• Zaragoza
• Pamplona
• Salamanca
• León

Most likely I won't visit all of them but at least some! Also Portugal interests me but the problem is that from Bilbao they fly with some small plane and I'm too scared of flying to go with that, haha. So I'd have to go all the way to Madrid so let's see... Now I just have to wait for to get my tax refunds in a few weeks!

Suomeksi: Kesä on ohi, ehkä espanjalaisille aiemmin mutta minulle nyt. Sadekausi on alkanut ja nyt on satanut melkein joka päivä. Jos suunnittelet matkaa Bilbaoon sateenvarjo on kyllä pakollinen! Sää on nyt myös kylmempi, jos on hyvä päivä lämpötila on noin +15 astetta. Huomasin myös että esimerkiksi +8 astetta tuntuu paljon kylmemmältä täällä kuin +8 astetta Suomessa kosteuden vuoksi.
Viime sunnuntaina vierailimme kavereiden kanssa Bilbaon messukeskuksessa (BEC). Tässä keskuksessa Suomi pelasi koripallon MM-kisoissa 2014. Messukeskuksessa oli tapahtuma nimeltään "Feria del Stock" missä myytiin vaatteita, kosmetiikkaa, ruokaa jne. Ostin vain puhelimelle suojakuoret ja joitain halpoja meikkejä. Muuten, yksi huvittava asia on se kun monta kertaa kun puhumme hinnoista ja joku sanoo "no, ei se ole kovin halpa, se on melko kallis" ja sitten kun kuulen hinnan minulle se on normaalihinta mitä maksaisin Suomessa tai jopa halvempi. Täällä kun ostan ruokaa noin viideksi päiväksi maksan noin 10€ vähemmän joka kerta kuin samoista ostoksista Suomessa.
Normaalipäiväni täällä Bilbaossa on herätä klo. 7.00 maanantaista torstaihin (Baskin kieltä klo. 8.00, parhain aika ikinä sille) ja kävellä kouluun (se kestää noin 20 minuuttia). Koulupäivät menevät tavallisesti nopeasti sillä ne eivät ole pitkiä minulle ja olen kotona klo. 14.30 paitsi perjantaisin noin klo. 13.00. Syön lounasta/päivällistä tai mikä ikinä onkaan heti kun tulen koulusta ja tavallisesti en syö toista isoa ateriaa. Sitten opiskelen (= yritän opiskella), laiskottelen, menen kävelylle jokivartta pitkin tai tapaan kavereita. Viikonloppuisin olen tyytyväinen ettei minun tarvitse tehdä töitä täällä joten rentoudun tai vierailen paikoissa. Täällä ihmisillä on tapana lähteä ulos myöhään, esimerkiksi viikolla on normaalia tavata kavereita yhdeksän aikaan illalla. Tuohon aikaan minua laiskottaa lähtä ulos mutta olen jo tottunut siihen enemmän.
Matkailualan vaihtareista olen ainoa joka on tulossa joulun jälkeen takaisin ja kaikista vaihtareista yksi niistä harvoista jotka ovat pidempään kuin jouluun asti mutta menevät jouluksi kotiin. En halunnut ottaa riskiä että olisin joutunut viettämään joulun yksin ja minulla on myös ollut valkoinen joulu viimeiset 24 vuotta joten siitä en luovu. Tarvitsen lunta ja hiihtämistä ainakin joulun ajaksi! Yhdessä vaiheessa kun podin pahaa koti-ikävää mietin tulisinko takaisin joulun jälkeen vai en mutta nyt olen sitä mieltä että se on parhain vaihtoehto: koulun vuoksi minulla ei ole nyt niin paljon aikaa matkustella ja sitten minun ei tarvitsisi tehdä kaikkia kokeita muutaman päivän sisällä ja stressata sitä pääsenkö niistä läpi vai en.
Tänään tein joitain matkasuunnitelmia tuleville kuukausille. Näissä paikoissa haluaisin käydä: Lekeitio (kaunis kylä lähellä Bilbaota), Vitoria (Baskimaan pääkaupunki), Madrid, Burgos, Zaragoza, Pamplona, Salamanca, León. Todennäköisesti en tule vierailemaan näissä kaikissa mutta ainakin joissain! Myös Portugali kiinnostaa minua mutta ongelma on se että Bilbaosta sinne lennetään jollain pienellä potkurikoneella ja pelkään liiaksi lentämistä noustakseni sellaiseen, haha. Joten minun pitäisi mennä Madridiin asti joten katsotaan.. Nyt minun täytyy vain odottaa että saan veronpalautukset muutaman viikon kuluttua!

Barrika beach & Pintxos in Casco Viejo

Hola! I'm so confused about the days, doesn't feel like Thursday at all! We had a four day holiday, weekend + two days because on Tuesday was All Saint's day (Día de Todos los Santos). Monday was just a day off because the University said so, which was obviously good. On All Saint's day it's a custom to return to the home villages to lay flowers on the graves of the relatives. On this day they also eat some very traditional dishes and delicacies, for example roasted chestnuts and almond cakes. Also on Monday there was Halloween celebrations but I don't care about it so much.

On Tuesday I visited Barrika beach. It's a 600 meters long beach surrounded by spectacular cliffs. It's located 25 km from Bilbao. The beach is kind of a wild with rocks and sand and it's not so big. The surroundings are green and beautiful. To take the best pictures you have to walk some stairs down and up again but it's not too bad. Up there is a restaurant/bar Golfo Norte which has a nice terrace where I was able to enjoy of the last warm moments in the middle of palm trees.

Yesterday I went to the Casco Viejo to enjoy some pintxos with a friend. It's a pintxo in Basque, in English and Spanish it's pincho. It's a small snack, typically eaten in bars and very traditional in the Basque country. They are related to tapas but the difference is that they are usually spiked with a toothpick (to prevent ingredients of falling off) often to a piece of bread. They are served in individual portions. Almost any ingredient can be put on the bread but the some of them are for example fish, croquettes, ham, cheese, mushroom etc.

Pintxos aren't normally expensive, the cheapest ones are 1-1,50€/piece. Pintxos are used as an excuse for socialising and typically one group of friends will go from one bar to another, drinking small glasses of wine or beer and eating pintxos. For example in Casco viejo there are pintxo places everywhere. Bilbao is very well-known for its gastronomy and pintxos are only one part of it! 

Suomeksi: Hola! Olen niin sekaisin päivistä, ei tunnu ollenkaan torstailta! Meillä oli neljän päivän loma, viikonloppu + kaksi päivää koska tiistaina oli "kaikkien pyhimysten päivä", suomessa vastaava on pyhäinmiestenpäivä. Maanantai oli vapaa siksi koska yliopisto päätti niin, mikä oli tietenkin hyvä. Pyhimysten päivänä on tapana palata kotikyliin ja viedä kukkia sukulaisten haudoille. Tänä päivänä myös syödään joitain hyvin perinteisiä ruokia ja herkkuja, kuten esimerkiksi paahdettuja kastanjoita tai mantelikakkuja. Maanantaina oli myös Halloween-juhlintaa mutta itse en välitä niin paljon siitä.

Tiistaina vierailin Barrika-nimisellä rannalla. Se on 600 metriä pitkä ranta jota ympäröi mahtavat kalliot. Se sijaitsee 25 kilometriä Bilbaosta. Ranta on jokseenkin villi, kiviä ja hiekkaa ja se ei ole kovin iso. Ympäristö on vihreä ja kaunis. Ottaakseen parhaat kuvat täytyy kävellä joitain portaita alas ja ylös mutta se ei ole liian paha. Ylhäällä on ravintola/baari Golfo Norte missä on mukava terassi jossa sain nauttia viimeisistä lämpimistä hetkistä palmujen keskellä.

Eilen menin Casco Viejoon nauttimaan pintxoista kaverin kanssa. Se on baskiksi pintxo, espanjaksi ja englanniksi pincho. Se on pieni purtava, syödään tyypillisesti baareissa ja se on Baskimaassa todella perinteinen. Pintxot ovat vähän niin kuin tapas mutta erilaista on se että niihin on pistetty hammastikku (estääkseen aineksia putoamasta) usein leipäpalaan. Ne tarjoillaan yksittäisannoksina. Oikeastaan mikä vain ainesosa voi olla leivän päällä mutta joitain aineksia ovat esimerkiksi kala, kroketit, kinkku, juusto, sienet, jne.

Pintxot eivät ole yleensä kalliita, halvimmat ovat 1-1,50€ kappale. Pintxoja käytetään syynä seurusteluun ja tyypillisesti ryhmä kaveruksia menee baarista toiseen, juoden pieniä viinilasillisia tai olutta ja syöden pintxoja. Esimerkiksi Casco Viejossa on pintxopaikkoja joka paikssa. Bilbao on todella tunnettu gastronomiastaan ja pintxot ovat vain yksi osa sitä!

Hello November

How come it's November already? Where has all the time gone? I have been here for two months now and Bilbao starts to feel more and more like home. I think about Finland a lot but now I haven't been so homesick as I was at some point. Surprisingly it helps when I think about how cold it is there.

Things I miss about Finland:

• Food: salmiakki candy, rye bread, this, karjalanpiirakka, Finnish chocolate, milk
• Faster traffic lights
• Shops open also on Sundays
• Sauna
• Cycling
• Snow
• Finnish nature
• Family and friends obviously
• Guaranteed warm water from the shower
• School lunch (2,60€) and school lunch at 11.30am

Things I don't miss about Finland:

• Cold weather and slush
• More expensive prices (1€ of a glass of white wine in a bar in Finland? NEVER)
• Darkness
• Drunkards at the streets
• Colder people
• Complaining (yes I admit, I do that a lot!)
• Swedish language and using it at work at times

During these recent weeks I have visited Guggenheim museum for free, watched football in the bar Casco Viejo, visited the Biscay Foral Delegation palace and just been enjoying the last rays of the sun. Above you can see picture of the palace. It's the seat of the executive branch of government of Biscay. Very beautiful building.

And how is my Spanish going? Before coming here when I made the Erasmus language test my level was B1 but in the exam in the university it was B2.1. Strange. In Finland I didn't speak Spanish out loud almost at all but I was writing a lot and my writing was obviously better because of that. 

I had studied Spanish for for years, in the adult high school and then in the university. It really helped a lot that I knew Spanish before coming here, many things would have been more difficult especially knowing that Spanish people don't speak so much English. After two months here I really noticed that I'm getting more and more fluent in speaking also. And what about Basque? Well, soon I can put it in my CV!

Näitten viikkojen aikana olen vieraillut Guggenheimissa ilmaiseksi, katsonut jalkapalloa vanhankaupungin baarissa, vieraillut Baskimaan hallinnon palatsissa (ei hajuakaan mikä se on suomeksi) ja vain nauttinut viimeisistä auringonsäteistä. Palatsi oli todella kaunis.

Ja kuinka sujuu espanja? Ennen tänne tuloa kun tein Erasmus-kielitestin se osoitti tasokseni B1 mutta kouluni kokeessa tasokseni määräytyi B2.1, outoa. Suomessa en juuri puhunut espanjaa ääneen mutta kirjoitin sitä paljon ja totta kai sen vuoksi kirjoitustaitoni oli parempi. Opiskelin espanjaa neljä vuotta, aikuislukiossa ja sitten yliopistossa. Se todella auttoi että osasin espanjaa jo ennen tänne tuloa, muuten monet asiat olisivat olleet paljon hankalampia erityisesti kun tiedetään etteivät espanjalaiset oikein puhu englantia. Nyt kahden kuukauden jälkeen olen todella huomannut että myös puhuminen on paljon sujuvampaa. Ja entä baskin kieli? No, kohta voin laittaa sen CV:hen.

Mount Artxanda

Hello! Two months in Bilbao already, how fast the time flies! This Sunday I visited Mount Artxanda with a couple of friends. It's a recreational area at the top of the mountain with panoramic views over Bilbao. Sadly this time the views were not so good because of the fog/clouds/whatever. The highest point is 251 meters.

A funicular takes you there and the trip lasts only 3 minutes. The funicular runs every 15 minutes or more often if needed. Standard ticket costs 0,95€. It works all labor days from 7.15am till 10pm. During holidays and Sunday from 8.15am to 10pm and during summer months June, July, August and September it ends at 11pm. The funicular was opened in 1915. The departure point is quite close to the center, within walking distance from the Guggenheim museum.

At the top there is a park, restaurants, hotel and a sports complex. The area is quite popular among the inhabitants of the city and the tourists. When we were there, there was many people enjoying the sun (+21 today!).  Earlier there used to be a casino also. The area itself is not so big, but it's nice and relaxing. 

Suomeksi: Moi taas! Kaksi kuukautta jo Bilbaossa, kuinka nopeasti aika meneekään! Tänä sunnuntaina vierailin kavereiden kanssa Mount Artxandalla. Se on virkistysalue vuoren huipulla ja sieltä on panoraamanäkymä Bilbaon ylitse. Harmi kyllä, tällä kertaa näkymät eivät olleet niin hienoja sumun/pilvien/minkä olikaan vuoksi. Korkein kohta on 251 metrissä.

Funikulaari vie sinut vuorelle ja matka kestää vain 3 minuuttia. Funikulaari kulkee joka 15 minuutti tai useammin tarvittaessa. Lippu maksaa 0,95€. Funikulaari kulkee työpäivinä kello 7.15 alkaen kello 22.00 asti. Lomina ja sunnuntaisin kello 8.15 alkaen kello 22.00 asti ja kesäkuukausina kesä-, heinä-, elo- ja syyskuussa se kulkee kello 23.00 asti. Funikulaari avattiin jo vuonna 1915. Sen lähtöasema on melko lähellä keskustaa, kävelyetäisyydellä Guggenheimista.

Huipulla on puisto, ravintoloita, hotelli ja urheilukeskus. Alue on melko suosittu turistien ja paikallisten keskuudessa. Kun olimme siellä, siellä oli paljon ihmisiä nauttimassa auringosta (+21 astetta tänään!). Alueella sijaitsi aiemmin myös kasino. Alue itsessään ei ole kovin suuri, mutta se on mukava ja rentouttava.

How is it going?

Over two weeks without writing. The reason for that is that basically I didn't have anything to write about as I was sick for over two weeks. Of course when I get the worst cold in three years I get it here. I missed so many days of school and a trip to Santander. Obviously I was super annoyed. Now I'm back in business though.

I haven't been doing much, just normal everyday life; hanging out with friends and surprise surprise, studying! We have had so many things to do and sometimes it's hard to find the balance between fun and work. I have been living here for nearly two months now and time has gone super fast I have to say. Two months till Christmas! Before Christmas my goal is to at least to visit Madrid and I hope there would be some little excursions organised in near future. I also want to visit Lekeitio, it's a little nice city closeby.

Last Sunday there was a football match between Athletic Bilbao and Real Sociedad. It's an important match as it's a derby, Real Sociedad comes from San Sebastian, the city close to Bilbao. I was watching the game with friends in the bar and the atmosphere was intense. Athletic Bilbao won 3-2 and I wish I would have been at the stadium experiencing it. I definitely have to go to see at least one Athletic match at some point. The picture above is Plaza Unamunu in Casco Viejo (Old Town). I have to say that the Old Town is maybe my favourite place in Bilbao. It has a lot of nice bars and pintxo places, a lot of shops and little streets where to wander. I actually noticed that my life is basically between the university, home and Casco Viejo as I quite rarely go to the center even though it's close.

It's so weird to say but today I miss snow even though there is no proper snow yet in Finland. Well, in two months I will experience it when I go back home for Christmas. I always talk about the weather, but it's so weird for me that the temperatures during the day here are still around +20 or even above. It's like Finnish summer! Anyways, now it's time to start studying as I have both Basque and Spanish exam next week...

P.s. They are filming Game of Thrones here in the places closeby at the moment, surely a good advertising for the Basque country!

Suomeksi: Yli kaksi viikkoa kirjoittamatta. Syy tälle on että minulla ei ollut mitään kirjoitettavaa sillä olin kipeänä yli kaksi viikkoa. Tottakai kun sairastun pahimpaan flunssaan kolmeen vuoteen se tapahtuu täällä. Olin tosi monta päivää poissa koulusta sekä retki Santanderiin jäi myös välistä. Olin tottakai todella ärsyyntynyt. Nyt olen kuitenkin back in business.

En ole tehnyt paljoa, elänyt vain normaalia jokapäiväistä elämää, tavannut kavereita ja yllätys yllätys, opiskellut. Meillä on tosi paljon opiskeltavaa ja joskus on on vaikea löytää tasapaino huvin ja työn välillä. Olen nyt asunut täällä lähes kaksi kuukautta ja täytyy sanoa että aika on mennyt tosi nopeasti. Kaksi kuukautta jouluun! Ennen joulua tavoitteeni on ainakin käydä Madridissa ja toivon että meille järjestettäisiin myös joitain pieniä retkiä lähitulevaisuudessa. Haluan myös vierailla Lekeitiossa, se on mukava pieni kaupunki lähistöllä.

Viime sunnuntaina Athletic Bilbao pelasi jalkapallo-ottelun Real Sociedadia vastaan. Se on tärkeä ottelu sillä se on paikallispeli, Real Sociedad tulee San Sebastianista joka on kaupunki Bilbaon lähellä. Olin katsomassa peliä kavereiden kanssa baarissa ja tunnelma oli intensiivinen. Athletic Bilbao voitti 3-2 ja toivoin että olisin voinut olla paikan päällä stadionilla kokemassa sen. Minun todellakin täytyy käydä katsomassa ainakin yksi Athleticin peli jossain vaiheessa. Kuva yläpuolella on Plaza Unamunu Casco Viejossa (Vanha kaupunki). Täytyy sanoa että vanha kaupunki on ehkä lempipaikkani Bilbaossa. Siellä on paljon kivoja baareja sekä pintxopaikkoja, paljon kauppoja ja pieniä katuja joissa kuljeskella. Itse asiassa huomasin että elämäni pyörii pääasiassa yliopiston, kodin ja Casco Viejon välillä sillä menen keskustaan melko harvoin vaikka se onkin lähellä.

Tuntuu oudolta sanoa tämä mutta ikävöin lunta vaikkei Suomessa edes vielä ole lunta! No, kahden kuukauden kuluttua koen sen kun menen jouluksi kotiin. Puhun aina säästä mutta minulle on tosi outoa että lämpötilat päivisin ovat vieläkin n. +20 astetta tai jopa enemmän. Se on kuin Suomen kesä! Anyways, nyt on aika aloittaa opiskelu sillä minulla on sekä Baskin että Espanjan koe ensi viikolla...

Studying in a Spanish university

After a month of studying I think it's a good time to tell more about my studies here. As you probably might have noticed, I study in Bilbao in a university called Universidad de Deusto. The other university in Bilbao is Universidad del País Vasco. Deusto was established in 1886 and it's the oldest private university in Spain. It has also a campus in San Sebastian. The campus of Bilbao is located opposite of the Guggenheim museum by the river. As you can see from the picture the school building is historical, but there are also newer parts on campus. Some of the classrooms are hard to find and very often I feel like I'm in Hogwarts, the stairs don't move though.

And what I'm studying here? I have in total five courses: congress and event management, analysis of tourism and leisure demand, tourist destinations, Spanish regular course level B2.1 and introduction to the Basque language and culture. One course is 6 ECTS so in total I have 30 ECTS. In Deusto you have to register at least for 30 ECTS per semester. One course has 4 classes per week and one class is 50 minutes. I have classes between 8.00am-2.00pm and every day I finish at 2pm except on Fridays at 1pm. Almost every day I have a longer break between some classes so in total we don't have so much classes. A bad thing for a Finn (as we have lunch around 11.30am already) is that the school lunch is served here from 1pm so I have to take snacks from home or buy some sandwich from the cafeteria.

I have found all the courses interesting so far. I have the tourism courses in English, in Spanish I have Basque and obviously Spanish. I didn't have so high expectations about the level of teaching in English here so I have to say it has exceeded my expectations. Also the style here is more practical what I expected, we have a lot of group projects and also activities during the classes so we don't always only sit and listen to the teacher. In my opinion the quality of the courses is equivalent to the courses in my home university, if not even better. One minus has to be given because of the course registration process. It's a nightmare as the secretary even said herself. You have to meet your academic coordinator to get acceptance for your course plan, then you have to get those signed papers to the international relations office and pick them up the following day. Then you have one certain day to bring those papers to the registrars' office and if you miss that date you will be in trouble.

The exams here are before and after Christmas so the autumn semester lasts from September until the beginning of February when the re-sit exam period ends. There is a possibility for the Exchange students to have all their exams before Christmas but I will come back after Christmas. I don't want to do five exams in five days and if I leave my flat earlier I will lose money as I have my contract until February. Also, I want to use this opportunity given for me and winter is much nicer here than in Finland. 

Suomeksi: Nyt kun on kuukausi jo tullut opiskeltua luulen että on jo aika kertoa enemmän opiskeluistani täällä. Kuten olettekin todennäköisesti huomanneet, opiskelen Bilbaossa yliopistossa nimeltään Universidad de Deusto. Toinen yliopisto Bilbaossa on Universidad del País Vasco. Deusto perustettiin vuonna 1886 ja se on vanhin yksityinen yliopisto Espanjassa. Deustolla on myös campus San Sebastianissa. Bilbaon campus sijaitsee vastapäätä Guggenheimia joen varrella. Kuten voit nähdä kuvasta, koulurakennus on historiallinen mutta campuksella on myös uudempia osia. Jotkin luokkahuoneista ovat hankala löytää ja todella usein minusta tuntuu siltä kuin olisin Tylypahkassa, portaat eivät kylläkään liiku.

Ja mitä opiskelen täällä? Yhteensä minulla on viisi kurssia (jotka kuulostavat hölmöiltä suomennettuna): kongressi-ja kokoushallinto, analyysi turismin ja vapaa-ajan kysynnästä, matkailukohteet, tavallinen espanjan kielen kurssi taso B2.1 sekä esittely Baskin kieleen ja kulttuuriin. Yksi kurssi on 6 opintopistettä joten yhteensä minulla on 30 opintopistettä. Deustossa täytyy rekisteröityä vähintään 30 opintopisteelle per lukukausi. Yhdellä kurssilla on neljä viikkotuntia ja yhden tunnin pituus on 50 minuuttia. Minulla on tunteja 8.00-14.00 välillä ja joka päivä pääsen kahdelta paitsi perjantaisin yhdeltä. Lähes joka päivä minulla on hyppytunti/hyppytunteja joten yhteensä meillä ei ole niin paljoa oppitunteja. Huono asia suomalaiselle (koska meillä on lounas jo 11.30) on se että lounas täällä alkaa vasta kello 13.00 joten minun täytyy ottaa eväitä kotoa tai ostaa sämpylä kahviosta.

Mielestäni kaikki kurssit ovat tähän mennessä olleet mielenkiintoisia. Matkailun kurssit minulla on englanniksi, espanjaksi baskin kieli ja tietenkin espanja. Minulla ei ollut niin korkeat odotukset opetuksen tasosta englanniksi joten täytyy sanoa että se on ylittänyt odotukseni. Myös opetustyyli on täällä enemmän käytännöllinen mitä odotin, meillä on paljon ryhmätöitä ja myös aktiviteetteja tuntien aikana joten emme aina ainoastaan kuuntele opettajaa. Mielestäni kurssien laatu on täällä yhtä hyvä verrattuna kotiyliopistooni, ellei jopa parempi. Yksi miinus täytyy antaa kursseille rekisteröitymisen vuoksi. Se on painajainen kuten koordinaattori itse sanoi. Sinun täytyy tavata akateeminen koordinaattorisi ja saada hänen hyväksyntänsä kurssisuunnitelmalle, sitten allekirjoitetut paperit täytyy viedä kansainvälisten suhteiden toimistoon ja hakea ne sieltä seuraavana päivänä. Sitten sinulla on yksi tietty päivä jolloin sinun täytyy viedä ne paperit rekisteröitymistoimistoon ja jos missaat kyseisen päivän olet vaikeuksissa.

Kokeet ovat täällä sekä ennen joulua että joulun jälkeen joten syyslukukausi kestää syyskuusta helmikuun alkuun jolloin uusintakoejakso loppuu. Vaihto-opiskelijoilla on mahdollisuus tehdä kaikki kokeet ennen joulua, mutta itse aion tulla takaisin joulun jälkeen. En halua tehdä viittä koetta viidessä päivässä ja jos luovutan asuntoni ennen helmikuuta mihin asti minulla on sopimus, häviän rahaa. Sitäpaitsi haluan käyttää tämän minulle annetun mahdollisuuden kunnolla ja talvihan on täällä paljon mukavampi kuin Suomessa.

Visiting a Basque farm and Plentzia

On Wednesday we had a visit to a Basque sheep farm with my class. It was around four-hour excursion and we got to see sheep, goats and chicken (and some cats and dogs). They told us that the sheep are free on the mountains most of the time. The sheep were so cute and kind. We also had a chance to try milking them and that was a new experience for me.

After petting the sheep for a while we had a workshop of how to make yogurt. We also made talo, which is a typical food of the Basque country (it looks like this). It's similar to the traditional corn tortilla and it's made of corn flour and water. Typical filling is chorizo (pork sausage) but we were modern and our filling was chocolate. It tasted really good!

On Sunday I visited a town nearby called Plentzia which is located 25 kilometers from Bilbao. Normally you can take a metro all the way there but now because of some construction works me and my friend got off at Sopelana and took a bus from there. One-way trip took around an hour. Plentzia has a big beach which is very popular, clean and the sea is calm. Plentzia has many holiday homes owned by wealthier families from Bilbao. We saw a lot of surfers but not so many people on the beach though as the temperature was "only" +21 degrees. 

Suomeksi: Keskiviikkona vierailimme luokan kanssa Baskilaisella lammasfarmilla. Retki kesti noin neljä tuntia jonka aikana näimme lampaita, vuohia ja kanoja (sekä joitain kissoja ja koiria). Meille kerrottiin että lampaat ovat vapaina vuorilla suurimman osan ajasta. Lampaat olivat niin söpöjä ja kilttejä. Meillä oli myös mahdollisuus yrittää lypsää niitä se oli minulle uusi kokemus.

Lampaiden silityksen jälkeen oli vuorossa workshop, jossa meille opetettiin miten tehdä jugurttia. Teimme myös taloa joka on tyypillinen ruoka Baskimaassa. Se on samanlainen kuin perinteinen maissitortilla ja se on tehty maissijauhosta ja vedestä. Tyypillinen täyte on chorizo-makkara mutta olimme moderneja ja meidän täytteenämme oli suklaata. Se oli todella hyvää!

Sunnuntaina vierailin lähikaupungissa nimeltä Plentzia joka sijaitsee 25 kilometriä Bilbaosta. Normaalisti sinne voi ottaa metron suoraan Bilbaosta mutta nyt siellä oli joitain rakennustöitä joten minä ja ystäväni jäimme pois Sopelanan pysäkillä ja otimme bussin sieltä. Yhdensuuntainen matka kesti noin tunnin. Plentziassa on iso ranta joka on todella suosittu, puhdas ja meri siellä on tyyni. Plentziassa on monia bilbaolaisten hieman varakkaampien perheiden omistamia vapaa-ajan asuntoja. Näimme paljon surffareita mutta emme niinkään paljon ihmisiä rannalla sillä lämpötila oli "vain" +21 astetta.
